The St James Park pelican colony began in 1664 as a gift to Charles II by the Russian ambassador. There are typically about 40 pelicans in the park, though they usually stick close to Duck Island. On the eastern edge of the park is Duck Island Cottage, a Swiss-style chalet built in 1841 as a home for the park's official bird-keeper.
